NEW INTEREST developing?

AWESOME --remember, at level 4 and up, you might want to branch off into an area of interest that you've now developed. Check with your teacher-- maybe you can substitute your topic or Big Question for the wording of any of the activities here?

If you love reading fiction mixed with thought-provoking ideas, here's your chance!  Depending on your age and the suitability, read ONE of the following, and write a poem, a song or a radio spot, about the way one of the characters, or a group of characters, is not having their rights met:

Suggested for primary and up:

  • Just Because: Where Seeing Another Point of View Makes a Better You,by Amber Housey

  • Charlotte’s Web, by E.B. White

  • Underground to Canada,by Barbara Smucker

  • The Velveteen Rabbit, by Margery Williams

  • Red Is the Color Of...by Tiffany Haisten

  • The Middle Passage: White Ships/Black Cargo, By Tom Feelings

  • Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt

Suggested for older students:

  • 1984, by George Orwell

  • Animal Farm, by George Orwell

  • Slave Narratives, by Elaine Landau

  • Lord of the Flies, by William Golding

  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

  • The Jungle by Upton Sinclair  (You can read The Jungle online for free at Project Gutenberg. ) WARNING: Contains some rather gory revelations about the meat industry.

  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1818)

  • Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk  (by the author of The Fight Club)

  • K-pax by Gene Brewer (1995) (made into a movie in 2001)
